Translation from German to English
The Cultivated Plants of the Tropics and Subtropics,
by Prof. Sigmund Rehm and Dr Gustav Espig, for Margraf Publishing.
This was a translation from German of a 400 page treatise, with
botanical and cultivation information about all the major food and
commercial plants.
Schmitter Catalogue. Schmitter are a major
manufacturer of hydraulic components for use in industry and on
vehicles fitted with cranes, tippers and rams. I have translated
their catalogue from German to English, as part of their ongoing
expansion into the international market.(with Margraf Publishing)
Nature Spirits and Elementals Beings by
Marko Pogacnic, was originally written in Slovenian, then translated
into German, then, with Karin Werner, we translated the German version
into English (my work was mostly on the English text). This book
was published by the Findhorn Press, and has been very successful,
going to a second edition.
Re-writing
Hot Water from the Sun. The original document
was written as a series of experiments using an 'artificial sun'
for testing different designs of solar panels using materials locally
and cheaply available in developing countries. I re-organised the
raw data so that useful information would be accessible to technicians
in the developing countries, e.g. coconut fibre may be 2% less efficient
as an insulator than fibre glass for the back of a solar panel,
but this may be very cheap, and so make good economics. I ensured
that the book was organised in a user-friendly way and that it could
be easily understood by the target audience (Margraf Publishing)
Text Correction of work by non-English authors.
Many Europeans speak English well, but cannot write English accurately
(I am the same with German). It is often better that someone does their in
English and has it corrected (by me !), rather than the expense
of translation from German.
Rainwater Collection Systems. This is a CD-ROM
for Margraf Publishing, where I have done text correction and
editing of the text for an audio-visual slide show and numerous
introductory articles and case studies by a variety of authors,
all on rainwater collection systems. The CD also includes the Conference
Papers from the 9th and 10th International Conferences on Rainwater
Catchment Systems
Colossoma - the salmon of the Amazon. This species was very
difficult to rear commercially. Eventually a team of Hungarian scientists
worked out how to do it, and wrote this book in English. I did the
few text corrections needed for Margraf Publishing.
Micro-Hydro Power Newsletter. This was established by a German
charity to link groups around the world working in this field (e.g.
in Tibet, the Andes, Kenya) and to encourage technical collaboration
directly between these groups rather than through European consultants.
I did text corrections for several issues, especially where foreigners
were attempting to write in English (FAKT, with Margraf Publishing)
Services in Germany. I lived
and worked in Germany for 2 years, and I speak German well, and
am comfortable with the culture. I would be interested in several
types of work there:-
- Conference and Exhibition work, where English and German are both needed
- Hosting Groups of Visitors. During my work at the Industrial Auction Site that
I managed in Neu-Isenburg (Sale of Agfa photo film factory), I
hosted several groups from Hungary, Indonesia, China, and India,
where the visitors had very poor English and no German at all.
I was able to help them do what they needed to do.
- Industrial and Technical Sales. I am interested
in all types of work in these sectors (including Industrial Auctions)
French Language. I lived in Brussels for
a year, and my French is fair. I would be interested in translation
work from French to English
There is also a Full List of my publications
organised by publisher.
